I chalk a lot of the problems up to the new production company. Next time should be a lot better. Uhhhm... There is no new production company... It's still TBS like it always has been... What changed is we don't have Monster9 taking care of doing the course itself...

Anyone notice how after the first stage the All Stars completely disappeared? I didn't see them for the rest of the broadcast, did they leave or just get cut out?

They must have left.
The mood was kinda dead for stages 2 and 3.

Were there any big name competitors sticking around? All I noticed was Kouji.

Even Li left....
But anyway, seeing Yamada's set all rusted and him cutting it down was really something.

They might have been asked to leave for stages 2 and 3

It's not new that they have all left before especially when TBS is focusing on someone else. Usually if there are very little amount of people they are asked to be there for them, however.. given that they were retired.. it would look weird to show them even if they WERE there.. since they should have left with their run. Maybe ask someone there if they stayed? I don't know the answer to that.

I'm sure they left on their own terms. If they were there, I'm almost certain they would have been shown.

I may be missing something wildly obvious, but did the official ratings come out yet?
I know there was an unofficial 8.4%, but I don't know how accurate that was.

All that stuff goes in this thread: sasukemaniac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=s28&action=display&thread=4586Besides.. given the holiday they haven't updated the weekly ratings page. Usually it's Wednesday but that's a Federal Holiday in both countries.

I seem to be the only one who thought Yamada got injured. Was I wrong or something?

I seem to be the only one who thought Yamada got injured. Was I wrong or something? Nah.. his knees are failing him as he's out of shape and getting older. There wasn't a "specific" injury he was nursing. Just out of shape.

Oh because I thought he hurt himself when passing the steps. He looked like he was limping the whole time.

Oh because I thought he hurt himself when passing the steps. He looked like he was limping the whole time. The fluff piece to me showed that when he ran he grasped his knee a lot. That's why I said not necessarily an "injury" rather than wear and tear from age. My take of course.

I wished I saw this tournament live, but because I was in the middle of moving and still don't have any internet. Using internet at a friends right now. Though I was able to watch it, so here are my thoughts like anybody might care.
First stage was pretty good. I was actually kinda hoping for less than 10 clears on the 1st stage and it happened. Modified Jump Hang was ok, though I feel like they probably took out a lot of the fails on that obstacle. Spinning bridge was just a force to be reckon with. I loved the double warped wall. I don't think I've ever cheered for the All-Stars that hard before. Every single one of them. I was sad Takeda fell in such the way he did, but I guess that's what happens when you don't compete in a couple years.
To me, the Second stage was awful. I applaud for trying something different, but man.. I was bored out of my mind, and it just seemed like most of the obstacles were just awkward and frustrating to just watch. The first two obstacles were fine, but after that was just ridiculous. I didn't care for the water tank, and new walled obstacle which I can't remember the name of was eh. I think I was just mainly frustrated with that first wall. It looked so awkward to watch them try to lift it made my head hurt. The split wall was ok in my book.
Third stage was just awesome. I loved every obstacle, even that second obstacle. Crazy Cliffhanger looks a lot better than the UCH in my opinion, and the next obstacle after that looks like it'll be fun to see someone try to attempt.
Overall, it was a pretty good tournament. Probably not in my top 5, but still pretty good. With mainly the elements of disappointment being in the 2nd stage.

A small detail but I like that they showed the runs in order.

I liked it except for the studio. And if they HAD to show the studio, ask the all-stars and shin sedai questions. Not box girl and all those actors who have never seen sasuke.

Long time no see, everyone. Just caught up on Sasuke Rising, some thoughts:
I generally enjoyed it, although I guess it's just nice to see Sasuke again after so long, I haven't really paid attention since 27.
I didn't really like the first stage, I thought the flow was off - one trivial obstacle straight into two very difficult ones - and the double wall just seemed lazy. Second stage was interesting, although I'm not sure the swimming obstacle really fits with the style of Sasuke, and the wall lift was a bit awkward. Props for experimentation, though.
The third stage was amazing, brutal yet elegant. The new cliff hanger is much more visually interesting than the ugly block that was the UCH. I feel they outdid themselves with the design there.
Missing many old faces who still had a lot to offer, no Kongu, no Okuyama, it's kind of a shame. The overall lineup seemed kind of weak, although maybe that's just the way it was cut. Urushihara, Matachi and co are so far ahead of everyone else, barring a few slip ups, that it seems almost imbalanced, like no one else even has a chance.
(EDIT: I've just read some other things and apparently the All Stars have retired? I watched it in Japanese with no context so I guess I didn't catch that, in which case ignore some of the points in the next paragraph.)
I feel the broadcasters really need to move past the All Stars if they want this show to stay fresh. I have great nostalgia for them the same as everyone else, and Nagano in particular is obviously still an elite competitor, but they're never going to be what they were. Basing the whole show around them has been old for a long time, and it's actually just getting kind of sad. You're never going to get people interested in fresh blood if you keep clinging on to the past. Yuuji, only person to complete the course twice on the hardest courses ever, only gets #88, just seems wrong.
(On the subject of the All Stars retiring, by the way, I'd like to see them back, I just don't want them to take up a third of the running time.)
The talking head reaction box in the bottom right got really irritating after a while. Nothing against that lady, I'd probably look f**king awkward too if someone shoved a camera in my face for 3 hours while I was watching a TV show.

Every single all-star was forced to retire after this tournament, that's why so much time was spent on them. Your viewpoint is sort of the view the new director Inui had. He wanted to get rid of everything Monster 9 built up. However, ratings seemed to indicate everyone stopped paying attention after the all-stars runs, because no one watched stage 2 and beyond.
