Hello fellow Maniacs. I would just like to inform everyone that you may now visit the Sasuke Maniac Fansite by its new URL: sasukemaniac.com. It's the best way to access all the awesome sites we have part of the SMF network. You may still access the site by its old URL sasukemaniac.netau.net. Also, we now will be accepting donations for an ad-free forum. It only costs $7 a month for 50,000 pageviews, and payment is through Google Checkout, so you know it's secure. If you want to make a donation, you can at www.proboards.com/credit-purchase.cgi?sasukemaniac.proboards.com. If you send either me or Scnoi an invoice of your donation (please block out any personal information,) we will add a "donor" title to your profile.

Just out of curiosity, will you be adding any information to the fansite (rather than just links to the forum, etc.)?

Good times. I'll check out my budget and see if I've got some I can donate.

The problem with that idea though is that proboards and wikia are on a closed system, you wouldn't be able to merge your site with them (for single logins) unless you had direct access to the sites and the databases.
You'd have to get a web server setup on your own, with your own DB and everything, and then incorporate the site, another wiki (copying over articles wouldn't be hard), and another forum; then merge them all to the same DB, but making sure they all read from the same members table will be the hard part.
That's quite a task =/

That's quite a task =/ yeah i know we can't use what we're using now. i more the likely planned on using phpbb and mediawiki as the new systems, but like you said, the problem would be merging the databases. I currently using a free hosting site which does have mysql, just it has alot of problems. we use to host the original wiki on our server but it only complained about things i have no access to, so we switched to a public wiki. kinda like the problem i have with the new .com, they don't have their s*** together and then i have problems. i would probably find a script to auto log every account into all the databases we have, if i can even find one. i know its a long shot unless i get a team of people together, but i would like to do something to those effects down the line, possibly during the summer. all depending on free time.

phpBB is nice and all, but the mediawiki extension for it isn't that great... if you install it incorrectly, then permissions on the forums will get all messed up. It happened to me when I was trying to use it on my server.
I've found that having separate forum and wiki accounts makes things a little bit easier on the back end of things, since they wont interfere, but obviously it looses that ease of access for visitors =/

A lot of popular sites have had their main page separate from something else. Usually the forums. If it comes down to it, I don't think that's THAT big of a deal. I mean, if someone is so lazy that they don't want to go to a separate site to see the information they're after, forget them.
I would drop the wiki altogether, honestly. It just seems useless. But hey, that's me.
PhpBB would be the easiest way to implement a forum INTO a main site, in my opinion.

I agree with Oti, drop the wiki and make all the pages hard copies rather than having vandals and people trying to edit one word for virtually no reason.

My reasoning isn't because of the vandals. I just see them as useless, unless you have a TON of content, like Wikipedia.

My reasoning isn't because of the vandals. I just see them as useless, unless you have a TON of content, like Wikipedia. It is not useless as someone that uses it with every blog. The original Wiki is a) vandalized to the point of ridiculousness b) does not have individual pages for each tournament c) does not have individual pages to people who have gone with their individual record. This alone is worth it's weight in gold for us who constantly use it. Feel free to disagree because you don't use it but for us who use it all the time it's a valuable tool.

blt024; I actually paid $7, like, months ago. I'd be more than willing to do it again, Scnoi could vouch, and/or I'll send you the e-mail I got from it.
[edit] blt, who the heck is 000webhosting.com? They're appending stat analytics to your homepage, and it's kinda... ...eh. Worrysome? I guess? The fact that they need to have "000" at the start of their name is kinda funny too.
If all you need to do is host those static pages, I'll do it for free, no strings attached. (I also suggest you look in the last page of the Music Thread over in General Sasuke.)
Oti; Wiki's are perfect for anything, storing/creating content there is perfectly effective. However, you're still right, in that if you don't have enough man-power to prevent vandals from ... well... being vandals, then it sucks. It's not about the content given a community of this size, it's about the vandals. Moderation always sucks when you have to do it.
anshinritsumai; Your first post in this thread amuses me.

VxJasonxV: i didn't know we even accepted donations until recently, but thank you for your contribution. 000webhost.com is the free web hosting service i use. 000 actually means $0.00, but its the best for free that i've found. i currently don't have the money for server space, or a reliable enough cable line to host my own server, so i work with what i have. its perfect for what we have right now.

I know that this is a huge bump, but this thread is a sticky in this board so hopefully it's justifiable considering what it's about. Regarding the whole Megaupload situation and a new private server for stuff: would the information for donating to this be through the same link as the one in the first post? Because the donation bar doesn't always display at the top of the forum. I'm curious because I got a job a few months ago and can probably donate some cash some time soon.

Technically, yes, it should work.
I tried in August, got the confirmation from Google Checkout and everything, but ProBoards apparently never recognized it and I was out $7, so make sure it goes through, and if something wrong happens, tell someone immediately so we can contact Google and/or ProBoards.
