Actually the only times #1 was given to any "established" competitor was competitions 20 and 27. When Koji got #1 he was just an anomaly. I don't think he had even competed before 12. While that's true, I think they knew that a firefighter would do well on stage 1, so they gave it to Koji. Whether they expected him to go to stage 3 is anyone's guess.

Sorry for bumping the thread but it's a still running topic.
I just realised that if the last 11 (90-100) are in order of the performances in 27, it would be this:
90- Person who had the best attempt at the Metal Spin (Morimoto?) or just put Shingo there. 91- Ishikawa 92- Okuyama 93- Stratis 94- Paul Kasemir 95- James McGrath 96- Nagano 97- David 98- Hashimoto 99- Ryo 100- Yuuji
Looks good to me.
I have a feeling that Kanno will be in the 90s again for his impressive performance.
