Unless there was some update that allowed it late on I haven't heard of any official use for usb hard drives, I mean there was rock band instruments and wii speak but I haven't heard of any non homebrew use for USB hard drives.
As for homebrew I know some media players can use USB, along with the USB Backup Loader (which reminds me I really need finish Skyward Sword... I usually don't feel like re hooking my Wii back up after Anime Club every week). And if I'm not mistaken I think on later versions of the Homebrew Channel you can use USB, but I dunno, I've always used SD cards for HBC (Considering early on that was the only option)

With that said, I wonder if there will be a way to transfer all Wii data onto the WiiU. It's probably unlikely, but just a thought. You will be able to transfer all to Virtual Console and Wii Ware purchases to your Wii U via SD. Just make sure you don't trade in your Wii in order to place a preorder for the Wii U. As for game saves, I imagine you would be able to transfer those via SD card since you can do that already between two different Wii consoles. www.destructoid.com/you-don-t-say-wii-needed-to-transfer-data-to-wii-u-234979.phtmlAs far as Nintendo and shortages go, well, that's been going on since 1988.

Apparently, any Wii game with online play won't allow you to save your data on an SD card (which concerns me for SSBB especially). That, along with all of the stuff on my Gamecube memory cards, is what I'm most curious about---like I mentioned earlier, if I download a Gamecube game onto the Wii U that I already have data for, would I be able to somehow transfer the data on the memory cards onto an SD card so I could put it onto the Wii U? Because for both Wii games with online compatibility and all Gamecube games, it would stink if we have to start from scratch (especially for more tedious and/or difficult games).

Because I don't learn from experience, I pre-ordered the Deluxe Set.
Along with picking up my Wii U, I will be purchasing New Super Mario Bros U.
I will only cry a little when the next "Nintendo Report" comes out and Iwata bows and cooly states that due to underwhelming sales figures, the Wii U will now cost $199.99.

Considering most stores are out of pre-orders, I doubt that will happen.

Btw for those who have the WiiU: www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/01/28/nintendo-sets-dates-for-30th-anniversary-wii-u-virtual-console-gamesConsider it somewhat of a primer for Virtual Console on Wii U, which launches in full this spring, all in the name of celebrating the 30th anniversary of Nintendo's original Famicom. There's no catch for dropping 30 cents on the game of the month—right now it's Balloon Fight—and it's all yours once you've downloaded it.
Here's the full list with dates:
Balloon Fight (NES): Wed, 1/23 to Thu, 2/21 F-Zero (SNES): Wed, 2/20 to Thu, 3/21 Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES): Wed, 3/20 to Thu, 4/18 Kirby's Adventure (NES): Wed, 4/17 to Thu, 5/16 Super Metroid (SNES): Wed, 5/15 to Thu, 6/13 Yoshi (NES): Wed, 6/12 to Thu, 7/11 Donkey Kong (NES): Mon, 7/15 to Tue, 8/13

It bugs me they haven't announced Gamecube games for the virtual console.

IIRC they made an official statement and said they have no plans for bringing GC games to the virtual console. Although there IS that Wind Waker HD remake, so maybe we'll get more remakes of first party GC games.

I have Balloon Fight from the Ambassador Program (read: Damn Fool Early Adopters' Program) I already bought F-Zero on the Wii's Virtual Console (at a price much higher than 30 cents, mind you) I have no interest in Punch Out (but what the hell, it's 30 cents) I already have Kirby's Adventure as part of Kirby's Dream Collection (which works out at $5 a game based on my $30 purchase price) Super Metroid (Ok, no complaints here. I haven't played it and will be picking it up) Yoshi (Ambassador Program) Donkey Kong (Ambassador Program). I already have 5 out the 7 games. And in one form or another, I grossly overpaid for each of them...
