West coast only. Did you read the tweets? Not all are positive and a lot are asking questions like wtf is this thing? ;D Still though I'm curious if they will beat Wipeout's 6 million. That's the benchmark for me since Wipeout does it every single week. West coast only? Confused on that. Most of the tweets are positive. Hell, even Tyra Banks was like, "This isn't my thing but I'm hooked!" Timeframe it's 12:33 am and when it was on Ube checked the trends and it didn't trend until West coast came online. So yes.. west coast The earlier ones were .. not so nice.. most were confused.. others angry others WHOO HOOO YEAH BABY.. but the trend shifted as soon as west coast came online It is 9pm there after all

Well, the Giants/Bears game looks like it was over by the half or at least the 3rd quarter so that's good but then RAW gave away a match-up on live TV that headlined their last two PPVs.

I think the Tyra Banks thing is very interesting in terms of ratings. Her tweets give the almost certain impression that she had ZERO familiarity with the show, yet she still got very into it and not only watched the whole program, but tweeted her disappointment. Seems to indicate that the format of the show (a well-done introduction to explain why the event is a big deal, competitor profiles, etc.) achieved its goal of hooking 'the average viewer.'

They went up at 10 pm because both ABC and CBS didn't have their big guns. They still ended up 4th overall while at 10 pm NBC went up to 3rd. Personally I don't see it as a good win but Lord knows if G4 can spin a .1 rating in cable they will spin this. Going last network during summer is still bad. We know ANW will be back as they said it. Now to see what happens overseas.

Ouch ... but not terribly surprising, to me. NBC really didn't promote it at all, and as much as we all love Sasuke, it has very much a niche viewership in the US.
If M9 was waiting on the ratings for this before airing Sasuke 27 as you suggested Arsenette, I wonder what the impact will be on the future of Sasuke? Without knowing what the execs in both japan and the US expected in terms of ratings, it's really difficult to predict exactly what this means.

I really really don't understand how you expected a show that nobody but a small niche knew about to beat shows with established fan bases. Because I doubt NBC was expecting it. It also did better than the show that aired before it, which was a pretty weak lead-in. Judging by the amount of activity on Facebook and Twitter (over 100k people 'Liked' it after the show) I think it was a success to be honest.

Agreed because "boost" from 4th to 3rd in an hour can be construed many different ways. We all know that all year NBC has been 4th in network so having anything beat it (even if the big guns stopped showing their new stuff at 10 pm and ANW STILL losing to repeats) is still a "boost". I'm sure they will spin what they can. Without knowing what the magic number was for M9 it's difficult to tell.

They couldn't beat the Wipeout 6 million+ mark it gets every single week.. and this was including both hours.. That's not good. I don't think it's fair to compare American Ninja Warrior to Wipeout. Wipeout is a weekly show that has a following (not like the one we have here, I'm using "following" in a different sense). ANW is a one time shot. People have to go to something NEW, which from what I've been reading on Twitter (yes I realize it's a small crowd), it succeeded in that. Don't get me wrong though, losing to a Two and a Half Men rerun is inexcusable.

Most people were getting upset that their negative comments were marked as a like so FB is not a good indication of that... just saying. Wipeout consistently is 6+ million even after their premiere a few years ago with no background at all. Their numbers were higher at the premiere and leveled off at first place every single week during their timeslot.. that's the comparison I have for ANW. We don't even know the Football numbers yet..

To be fair, to someone with no knowledge of the show, "American Ninja Warrior" sounds like a cheesy 80's movie

So it did seemingly okay. Didn't reach wipe-out number but for something with little fan following, not bad.

I don't think that is a bad thing. Wipeout gets more viewers, and consistently, but I think there are a few things that should be considered: 1. Wipeout is on a different channel (ABC), a different day, and a different time. Maybe people aren't used to watching NBC on Monday nights. 2. I'm not a huge ratings person, but did Wipeout gain viewers as time went on (and it gained more buzz) or lost them? 3. ANW was a 2 hour special. I think it is pretty impressive to hold almost 4 million viewers for a 2 hour pilot (which, essentially, it was for a real network). 4. America's Got talent had 3.96 million viewers. ANW had 3.95 million. That is pretty good when you compare the two, especially since AGT is an established show with buzz, even during repeats. 5. How much promotion did it receive? I remember back when Wipeout came out and they promoted the crap out of it! Plus, it happened during the huge interest in Japanese game shows: Wipeout, I Survived a Japanese game show and Hole in the Wall all came out in 2008. And I believe that Wipeout came out last during the summer, while the other two were mid/late spring. *edit again: never mind.
