I have at least a decent idea of how Japanese companies are; I did work for one for 3 years Well if you're intrigued, that's great. I'm very happy for the people that are enjoying it. For me personally, it just feels very much like Advent Children. By that I mean, it starts to become more flash than substance, the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and its themes are antithetical to the original game (even the game existing is antithetical to Sakuguchi's vision of what Final Fantasy should be). I don't really think that's the direction a company should go with for a game titled "remake", at least not one that people have been frothing at the bits to play for nearly 20 years. If it was a less well renowned game, or a newer game, I don't think the direction would be so controversial. Even though the game goes in some weird directions, I'm more of the mindset that they did it mostly to screw with people and to have a more fun and cinematic ending to a game that would otherwise end on just an okay note. Personally, I think that kind of undercuts moments that happen (or might not happen?) in future games, but who really knows. I think the future games will play out largely in the same way as this first one with main story beats being hit with some key changes to throw people off. Reading interviews from the new Ultimania has put me a little more at ease, but I fundamentally disagree with this direction and I refuse to get excited for another SE product for the forseeable future. The ending does feel Kingdom Heartsy to me. As for who is in charge, I read an interview recently that suggested Kitase's involvement was actually quite minimal and that Nomura was the big player here. Paraphrasing here because I can't find the interview at this exact moment, but it said that Nomura created the basic outline for the story and handed it off to Nojima, and everyone in the team (Kitase included) went to Nomura anytime they had questions. Like with any game, you can't pin the blame or accolades on one man, but I think it's pretty clear from interviews that Nomura was the biggest player of this project, but I can see Toriyama's fingerprints all over the game as well.

Like with any game, you can't pin the blame or accolades on one man, but I think it's pretty clear from interviews that Nomura was the biggest player of this project, but I can see Toriyama's fingerprints all over the game as well. True but Nomura was hired after Kitase passed on it. It was Kitase who brought it back up again. Remember.. This is a trial balloon for the FF6 remake. IF this goes well (after the series is done) they plan to do this to FF6. Everyone is holding their breath. As for story changes (which I haven't seen yet but will soon) it was never a strong story to begin with. I've already said that this has always been one of the weaker stories and it needed a touch up so I was totally for it. I'm positive it will create more plot holes and it already had huge gaping ones to begin with. I agree that it's Advent Children. I've said that for a while now. I like the movie but it had something missing from it. Maybe they can now redo the whole thing and add it to the story and FINALLY make sense. Again.. FF7 was never about the story but it's characters. Character wise we know the main cast even outside of the game. So what specifically happens from this point is anyone's guess. Given we only have a small portion of the story hashed out.. we really don't know where this is going. Unlike the original where the whole story took place in one game and the gimmick in that was to keep surprises to the end of the game force omitting plot things from the beginning we now have a totally different beast. We know the story (or at least we think we do because of the original) but they plan to use our memory of the world and characters against us. Frankly I find that fascinating and a lot more compelling than what we got the first time around for the Midgar portion of the original. If the conversation is so feverish as to trying to figure out wtf is going on then gamewise they got what they hoped for and it will cause people to see the next game when it comes out (they are already working on it). I'm sure Squeenix sees that as a hardcore win. Didn't they sell like 3 million units in 3 days?

Let's be honest, the game was going to sell well no matter what - if it was the best game of all time, or the worst game of all time. I'm not gonna downplay the numbers, but FF15 had a stronger opening week. I would've expected FF7R to be their fastest selling title.
I disagree about the story of the original. I really love the story. It pulls off something really special with making the main character an unreliable narrator and then switching that role onto the villain. The double fake-out with Cloud's identity is incredibly well done. Him removing his helmet is seriously probably my favorite moment in gaming. It also has one of my favorite video game endings.
The rampant speculation doesn't do it for me anymore. Not after being dragged along for 15 years with the KH story (which is half my entire life, mind you). Seemingly this is going to take longer than even they initially planned on. I don't expect us to see the ending until 2030 at least.
edit: With the Ultimania coming out and being translated, I don't even know how much speculation there is anymore. Nomura is already confirming many of the theories. Very odd.

I haven't been doing so well so I took a break off games that require extreme concentration. So I've been on Animal Crossing or just laying down. I do want to go back to it. Oh btw.. I got the 7/8 disk limited soundtrack. It's.. amazing..

The soundtrack was definitely a highlight of the game despite them ruining a few of my favorite songs (what the hell happened to oppressed people? lol).

I really hope I didn't break the rule by bumping this thread....
With 55 pages inside this thread, it will be tiring job to scroll it one by one, so apologies if any ever mention this game.
Had anyone here ever played The House of the Dead Series by SEGA? Quite a good series. The fourth installment, The House of the Dead 4, was the first arcade game I ever played. In fact, it was the only reason I would go to the mall near my house, just to play it. I'm so glad to hear in 2018, after almost went hiatus for a decade *even almost 13 years if we just talk about arcade game, as the game released in 2009 was not released in arcade version*, SEGA finally launch the latest video game in the series, House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn. But the first four games was still the best in the series for me. I'm so happy to find it late in 2019 that it can be played on a Computer *albeit the fourth need a help from an application named Tekno Parrot*. I'm hearing that the next The House of the Dead was in production, but due to Coronavirus, it had to be stopped for now. Shame.

No worries! I've literally only been playing Civilization 5 (with mods) and Monster Hunter World. I haven't even finished Final Fantasy yet.. ehem.. and Animal Crossing I gave a break because I had attachment problems I've seen my husband and my friends play it. I'm squeamish so I don't play horror games. Definitely am familiar with House of the Dead.

Wahaha. I see your Final Fantasy progress! *although, honestly, only the first four episodes as it was quite long 😂*. Made me quite interested in the game.
The funny thing is, I'm also scared to watch Horror films. But the same don't applied for monsters. Well, I guess I'm only afraid to Ghost.

FF16 being made by Yoshida, like I predicted.Very excited about that news, though I wasn't super excited by the trailer itself.

That was his idea from the beginning and the only reason why he agreed to take the job a couple years ago. I was very happy with the presentation. Sony is getting better at it. The earlier one this year from both Microsoft and Sony were terrible. Seems they are getting the message that people want succinct game related information in bite sized formats. So far I'm happy with what I saw with FFXVI, Vergil DLC for Devil May Cry, and Dark Souls looks AMAZING. We are holding off on buying a PS5 until probably God of War next year which I estimate will be Holiday 2021. By then all the kinks will be out from the new system.

Pretty clear they changed their pre-order date at the last minute to beat Microsoft and it's kinda blowing up in their faces. I'm fine with whatever setting they want for FF, and since we're already getting 7 remake, this setting is trying something different. I'm just happy that Yoshida is producing it because I know there's no way this is gonna be an FF7R, FF13, FF15, or KH3 fiasco with him at the helm. He knows how to get things done. Also, FF games are usually visual showpieces that are years ahead of the curve graphically. FF16 looks good, but it clearly is not trying to push the limits of gaming visuals like their last few titles have all tried to do. That's honestly good because SE's obsession with graphics has really hurt their productivity. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if we get this game in early 2022. I'm not really familiar with the director's work. I'm also not a big fan of the main character's design, but whatever. Combat looks good for an action game. I feel like SE answered my prayers here. I said if they wanted to do an action game then they need to hire people who make action games instead of trying these weird hybrid systems or hiring people who have never worked on action games. It was clear in FF13 and FF15 that they wanted to make action games but felt some pull not to do so. Seems like they have finally decided to just go all in on the action and they hired staff from Devil May Cry (pretty much the best action combat you're gonna get outside of platinum). I'm just personally tired of these half measures. Either give me turn based or action. No more weird hybrids. I ended up vibing with FF7R's combat by the end, but I'd still just prefer they choose one or the other. So yeah, no complaints from me. Their A team is working on FF7R2 and staff from the 14 team seem to be working on this. I wonder if it takes place in Eorzea.

Who could forgot Caleb Goldman's awful speech near the end of The House of the Dead 2!? If you play it on Wii, then you surely already encounter the special game, the Time Machine, unlockable when you finish The House of the Dead III. The elevator will take you back from 2019 to 2000.

Kinda glad other people are getting a chance at making FF games. The vets are tied up with FF7R. Pretty clear from the trailer that this is the lesser of the two projects, but I'm excited for it.

Soooooo...
About that Cyberpunk 2077 launch. CDPR, a darling of the industry, have just tanked their credibility considerably in the last few days.
What was supposed to be one of the greatest games of all time is now looking to be (disregarding the crippling technical issues) just a pretty good action/shooter game, with a decent story, great graphics but not much depth behind the hood.
I still have strong confidence CDPR will fix and improve the game over time - their work on Witcher 3 proves that - but this has to be one of the most significant botched launches in history.
While I'm still hesitant to call CDPR a "bad" developer/publisher (they still have plenty of consumer friendly choices in their pricing, free next-gen updates, free updates and so on), especially compared to the likes of EA and Bethesda, this is a heavy blow.
