Well, just like The Anime Thread, we have quite a few threads about video games, and they too are also pretty specific and not well rounded for general discussion. So, like the Anime Thread, let's try to have a place where we can have some centralized discussion about some games that we like to play, used to play, want to play, etc. And I guess I'll start us off again... I'm currently playing... - World of Warcraft: Cataclysm - StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - League of Legends - Minecraft - Counter-Strike: Source - Day of Defeat: Source - Team Fortress 2 - Left 4 Dead 2 - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 I'm looking forward to Homefront, and Shogun: Total War 2. If you can't tell, i'm a PC gamer first and foremost. I still play console games every now and then, especially for some staple titles/series that I've come to love over the years. I have an account on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, no Wii or DS codes though.

MMO's: -City of Heroes/Villians (played for about a year) -Final Fantasy 11 (refuse to play 14) (Played overall about 5 years) -Lord of the Rings Online (currently playing) (I've played more.. but you said the ones I liked ) The rest (mix of PC and console): -Halo (just about every series.. though I particularly enjoyed 1 and the most recent Reach.. I wouldn't mind 1 being redone with the Reach Engine.. which is the current rumor) -Oblivion (or anything in that universe.. I came late to the genre.. but I think that is Elder's Scrolls) -A LOT of RPG's.. too many to name. I did like the Final Fantasy series but preferred old school and very specific new school stuff.. I hated 10 with an utter passion.. so much so that I stopped playing), Blue Dragon, Suikoden (still my favorite.. partially because it was my first one.. very fond memories), etc. Not much of a major Zelda fan though.. that's it's own genre to me though. -I play a LOT of arcade stuff on Xbox/computer - Hasbro games, Mahjong (both tiles and actual game), Monopoly, etc. I consider myself a board game junkie and even Xbox exclusives like the Keflings.. I love that kind of stuff -I like some RTS (like original Starcraft.. haven't bought 2 yet though). I'll update this as I remember it.

I'm focused on study right now, so games have taken a back seat, although I do play a bit now and then. Right now, if I play anything, it'd be EpicMafia. www.epicmafia.comProbably going to pick up a 3DS once I've graduated and finished all my exams.

Currently only playing COD Black Ops for PS3 until I reach 15th prestige level 50. Then won't be playing as much.... only with friends.

Arsenette, what are your favorite FF's?
I agree, 10 was awful. Though I think 8 is pretty close to being as bad.

My video game spectrum is pretty narrow. I never got a console system until the Wii- before that it was Gameboy only.
I fell in love with the entire Wario Land series: Super Mario Land -> Super Mario Land 2 -> Super Mario Land 3/ Wario Land -> Wario Land 2 -> Wario Land 3 -> Wario Land 4.
Even though the games are pretty old (the first one was made before I was born!) I still come back to them time and time again.
I'm pretty much addicted to logic puzzles, so I fell in love with the Professor Layton series.
I like the f-zero series even though I've only played the 2d ones on the Wii's virtual console and on the GBA.
When it comes to newer games, I love the Super Monkey Ball series and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.
Pretty much the only "shooter" style game I've ever played is Portal. I have an XBox 360 and Kinect, however, with my crazy school schedule, I always come home too tired to want to stand up and run around my living room.

Hate me if you want, I am anxiously waiting Dynasty Warriors 7.
I love china's history, especially the 3 kingdoms dynasty.
Even though this game totally butchers the history, it's awesome to see all of my favorite historical figures in one game fighting each other. I really love Guan Yu and Lu Bu and the sorts, and the gameplay is repetitive but simply fun. That's what games are supposed to be about right? Pure fun.
I love story, but if the gameplay keeps me interested that's all that matters.
I would call this series a "guilty pleasure". AKA a game that you're embarassed to say you love.

Love Dynasty Warriors, but I do wish they'd update the game engine to do more than have just prettier graphics and render more soldiers on screen at once. I would also like to see better multiplayer support, and for the love of god better voice acting. The ability to switch between English and Japanese is nice, but for a game about fictionalized accounts of actual Chinese history, they should also incorporate Chinese voices.

I used to have a ton of fun playing Dynasty Warriors as a little kid, had no idea what I was doing, but that was part of the charm, it's a relatively simple game if I remember correctly. Run to a group of enemies, kill, try and fail to get onto a horse, rinse and repeat.

Arsenette, what are your favorite FF's? I agree, 10 was awful. Though I think 8 is pretty close to being as bad. I came to FF very late (my first was 7) but remember other people playing the old school ones. My husband's favorite is 6 and I have to agree with him. I liked 7 for what it was (played it 5 times (full play through with everything gotten.. especially since I'm a damn completist..) and although the story was generic I still liked it. 8 I thought was horrible simply because I felt it didn't "feel" like a Final Fantasy game. I loved 9 with an utter passion (even though some of the character super deformed heads was kinda weird) but I felt THAT was closer to the spirit of Final Fantasy than 8 ever was (though I did play both .. full completion). Then 10 came out and I realized WHY so many of the original writers left Square.. 10 was an abomination.. and even the 10-2 Barbie Dress up was just as bad. 11 we already covered and 12 was getting closer but the JRPG set up of the stupid fetch quests to kill time killed my enjoyment of that game. I did enjoy the political intrigue of it but I felt it was losing it's touch. 13 was a brash new way of doing the game (meaning the fighting system and I enjoyed that part). But the set up again of the JRPG of grinding to get full completion is wearing very very thin.. 14 was an atrocity.. and it will take a long time if they have that much to fix that game. I won't pay a dime for it though. I don't see it lasting much longer.. which is a shame because the game visually GORGEOUS.. So if I could list them in order of love + completion (because I really haven't played a lot of the earlier ones) 9 6 7 5 11 (though it shouldn't be on the list since it's an MMO) 12 13 . 8 . that's it.. I hated 10 that badly.. LOL and I haven't played the others to full completion.

Wow, i have to say i thought 8 was brilliant; i played it when i was around 11 and was totally taken by the squall/rinoa angle. I replayed a while ago and the only negative for me was a lack of depth at the end. There was nothing to do like in 7 or 10.
10 was amazing imo; it had incredible depth and a a very intriguing storyline. I absolutely loved it. I played 9 a few months ago and just couldn't get into it but i'll try again. 12, the one with the Vaan, i hated at first but upon replaying i thought it was great too.
Those are the only ones i've played. My favourite? 8 was my first, so it means abit more, but i can't choose between 7,8 and 10.

I think age in which you played has a lot to do with how much you enjoyed the "old school" ones rather than the new school ones. Anyone in the newer generation did not grow up relying on "story" to get you through the 8-16 bit graphics. I know personally a lot of kids who dismiss the older ones simply because of the graphics. They were intrigued by the pictures on the screen though the games lacked any plot, feeling or even depth. 10 has almost no plot or intriguing storyline. I know it's a generational thing. I know 7 is one of my favorites simply because it was one my first RPG's so that has more sentimental value. I can understand why kids like 10 though.. I just couldn't get past the idea of Meg Ryan being a emo "male" bitching the entire storyline without growing up.. LOL OMG I hated that game.. then again.. especially the mechanics... it was so damn stuck on itself that the designers forced that ball game down your throat that it literally grinded the game to a halt until you got good enough to pass the it to advance the storyline.. that's just bad mechanics.. they should have had a auto play mode for those who didn't give a rats a$$ about the game or stuck it in a mini game section (like the Golden Saucer in 7) rather than force people to play the game to advance the "plot".
8 would have been a better game if it didn't have the title of "Final Fantasy" tied to it. Seriously.. it just didn't fit the genre. Even so I played that game to full completion (cards, chocobos all secret monsters). I do laugh how they were trying to address the grinders in the game by systematically raising the level of the monsters to match yours to try to avoid an uneven match.. that alone made me grind higher to prove a point.. LOL It was just such a "cheap" game.. there was no strategy to it.. and it really only existed to sell a soundtrack to the idol at the time.

Those are the only ones i've played. My favourite? 8 was my first, so it means abit more, but i can't choose between 7,8 and 10. Incoming long Final Fantasy 8 RantWow really? I mean it's your opinion, but I reaalllllly hate 8. The card game was awful, the main character was literally the worst in a final fantasy game (yes worse than cloud). I think someone counted his dialogue lines and literally over 1/3 of his lines were "...". The magic/draw system was ridiculously boring. The summons were over-powered and they had almost 0 drawback. So I'd win every fight simply by summoning over and over and over again, which got boring watching those same long cutscenes. Cool at first, not after seeing them 1,000 times. The love story between Squall and Rinoa is simply awful. It's no where close to the love story from 6, or any of the other love stories. It's fleshed out at all. The time travel aspect is the worst. Time travel is already an awful thing to put into movies and video games, especially if done wrong like in 8. The side characters get 0 developement. Selphie and Zell literally do not change throughout the game nor do we hear their backstories. Not even Squall gets fleshed out on. The side story in squall's mind whenever the group falls asleep is useless and boring. The game starts in an incredibly boring way, you wake up in a hospital bed... in 7 you are invading a base fighting cool monsters with the music blazing! Just the start of this game was not exciting. Also it does a horrible job of explaining the brand new mechanics. It throws SO much information at you at the start, just text upon text upon text and you'll spend hours before actually figuring out how the gameplay works. It's so incredibly confusing at the start and even after fighting I still wasn't sure exactly what everything did. This isn't even TOUCHING the god awful convulated unimaginative story that this game has. I'd go into more detail here but we'd be here forever... it's one of the worst stories in a Final Fantasy game, and yes that INCLUDES the first few that have almost 0 story. The only light at the end of the tunnel for this game is the AMAZING soundtrack. I'll give props here... this is one of the best soundtracks in any final fantasy game, or simply any game ever. Though that's nowhere near enough to save this game. If you want an actual review... A guy called Spoony reviewed it awhile back, and he covers my views of the game pretty well, almost to a T. It's also incredibly funny, you guys should check it out. "The Spoony Experiment"
