we leave DST in Australia on April 5, when we "gain" an hour.

I wish the entire concept of DST would be abolished. I don't like the idea of it for any reason.

Maybe it's bad for you but for many people it's essential in order to get a decent amount of daylight Uhm.. daylight saving time doesn't magically give more sunlight from the sun. It's shifting your clock to give you the appearance of daytime during a certain time of day. It doesn't give you time out of thin air. Waking up in the morning to absolute darkness isn't fun. I hated it as a kid going to school when it was as dark as 3 am.
