forums.g4tv.com/showthread.php?t=147822This was something I was thinking about for a while but never really gave it much thought until now. The ANW production is basically an American Sasuke filled with competitors of all walks of life and varying (and sometimes lacking) in skill to try to emulate the Sasuke course which has joke competitors and whatnot. So.. given that they are trying to emulate Sasuke.. that would also mean that they should allow foreigners to enter the show. Problem of course arises.. if that person from another country wins the event.. should G4 send that person over someone from the USA? See the problem with not specifying that ANW is strictly a trials? Or are they really trying to recreate Sasuke here in the USA? Thoughts?

Yes. Proof: Dickie Boy (Richard King) IMO he's at least a resident alien if not already a citizen. That's not the same thing as someone coming to this country for the sole purpose of getting on Sasuke through American Trials. Dickey LIVES here.

I think they should let people from other countries compete and then fly them to Japan for Sasuke (not like any other country sends people (JET had trials ONCE and they don't have the rights to Sasuke anymore) and TBS makes you go through your local TV company (I.E. even if you can pay your way they won't take you) so that means G4 is pretty much the only channel sending people.. Realistically would G4 send someone? Nope.. G4 wouldn't despite the fact they should.. on the other hand this takes away spots from people here who should get a chance (I.E. the forum guys trying ) so I'm really mixed about this.. I say send foreigners if they compete and win until I'm old enough to enter EDIT: Yes. Proof: Dickie Boy (Richard King) He repped New Zealand for 25 but doesn't he live in California?

Well .. it also depends on whether you think G4 runs M9. Fact of the matter is that M9 has clearly stated they are no longer taking foreign applications directly and will deal with TV stations. That didn't stop quite a few people in 25 to come from other countries. One would assume they had some backing from their TV station though I believe they were in Japan already (putting them through the application process since they were already in the country).
G4's already gone on record (even on the post in the forums I got this from) that it's a casting call and NOT a trials. ANW they were lucky that they got the people they wanted anyway so they didn't have to exercise their already printed provision (it's in the rules) in picking who they want to go to Japan irregardless of how well they did. If they didn't.. G4 would still find a way to get whoever they wanted to go to Japan over someone who actually won the competition. This is why I don't like the format of ANW. Sasuke Trials is at least fair. You know someone didn't make it because they failed in their trials. G4 wants personalities or at least someone they can make money off of (i.e. Pro freerunners they can smooze sponsorship money from).
I think if they allow foreign competitors (legitimate ones.. like in this case they already make no bones they are an Irish citizen) they open up a can of worms. It's already a huge competition (ANW was 350 that were allowed to run with more in the parking lot that didn't get a chance) adding to what I amount to as a horrible unorganized first stage. If the word got out that ANW is a ticket to Sasuke irregardless of country.. I suspect more will do the trip if they feel they have no other chance otherwise.

This isn't true about G4 hand picking contestants. Some of the people from G4 (not pilgrim) were bummed when I didn't make it, but they had these legally required judges from some government agency (who didn't know WTF they were doing by the way) who make all the calls. Apparently they're required by law at all game shows to make sure producers don't fudge the results. It's actually because of them that I didn't go to Japan. They told us we "couldn't touch the tires with any part of our upper body" so I touched the sand when I stumbled and they still called me on it. If the sand was off limits I could have easily put my knee down on the tire to catch myself. I should have argued it like Travis did, oh well!

Going by what the rules say and what G4 mods posted on the thread I linked they are still calling it a casting call. The change from casting call to whoever makes top 10 was made during ANW between the Semi-finals and finals. If you remember the rules that stated that they reserve the right to decide the contestants given that it's not a competition but a casting call. I think once they realized that they didn't have to do that after they got who they wanted in the Semi's it just became a non-issue. While they do not have the right to change the outcome of each individual event they still have the legal right to pick who goes to Japan with that provision alone. It may come to this in ANW2 and we don't know how they are going to do the latter rounds. ANW is not trials even by their definition and description on the application. It's a show that G4 is producing for entertainment purposes.

I Doubt they'd let it happen. Levi is well known amongst sasuke fans in Japan so you would assume he'd be at every torunament regardless of how he does because, like i think you've said arsenette, he's Mr America to them and so a good marketing tool. I guess you could add Brian because of his good showing in 25.
Adding in foreigners just complicates things. If a load of foreginers came over and won then you would think that because they're the best they should go to japan. This would be unfair to the american competitors. However, Europeans are essentially screwed seeing as it's not possible to go. Its not fair, but it's not like you can blame anyone.

I dont think theres a problem if someone from outside the us wants to go on ANW. But of course with the guy in question being Irish I am sorta biased

I don't think the amount of Foreigners coming to ANW will be that much. I don't think it will be a problem. I want to see some people on this board from Europe compete.

IF G4 allowed non-americans in (and actually sent them), I think as well that not a lot of people would go there. Basically, it would only be the people here plus a few others. And not all of us europeans could afford to travel there, remember. Anyway. IF they are trying to recreate Sasuke (which would be the reason why it would be opened to non-americans), they should send whoever wins it. IF they are not, and it's still an American Trial (not a casting call, or whatever), they can have as many people they want from other countries, but they shouldn't send them. It would be unfair to Americans.

Arsenette: You can send in a video to GUARANTEE a spot. You may be pushed back but if they told you you'd get a spot, you're getting it.
Yeah besides that you may not end up running, you just have to be sure to send in a video and get it okayed by G4 before then. There's not much more too it than that.
I also think you're blowing this way out of proportion. 10 people went to Japan. The best won. (Though things like David's DQ was bs) other people like Ruselis legitimately failed.

No I'm not, I just felt like adressing a different point brought up in this thread.
As for the original dealing with foreignors, it should be obvious where I stand on that. If they compete at ANW and win of course they should be sent. They won did they not?
Unless G4 has some only american rule.
I also highly doubt if they did allow people from other countries that ANW would get "swarmed". I doubt that many people are going to pay for a plane ticket to fly to america to get onto ANW.
Even if they did and G4 got a ton of people, they simply get the people with guaranteed spots (IE the video senders) and then handpick from the rest of the crowd.
Unfair? Not at all... because the rest of the crowd failed to get a gauranteed spot because they didn't send in a video.
It's flawed but not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be.

I was asking merely for a discussion and you pointed out yours That's all I wanted I figured it would be a dilemna clearly because the title of the show they are producing is "American" Ninja Warrior. Given that M9 has mandated that all US only entrants come from G4 it causes a problem when other countries try to circumvent that rule. While I don't mind someone else winning the competition it could cause a problem for G4 given that M9 asked them for Americans.. if some Greek guy won.. why would he be American when he's clearly Greek? You see what I mean? This is where I was bothered that ANW is a show and not a trials. Defeats the purpose of why G4 was given the license by M9 in the first place.

Ah sorry, I see your point a bit more clearly now.
Yes that would be a bit problematic. Perhaps g4 and M9 have some contract to prevent people outside of america from getting through the qualifiers, who knows.
Though I don't think M9 would care personally. They didn't even list Rich as an american despite him going through G4. Even you and Ube thought it was weird he was being used as the New Zealand Rep.
They might actually like it if someone from another country got in with the americans.
Dunno how G4 would feel about it though.

It is an interesting dilemna mostly because it's going to force G4 to make a decision. We want ANW to be be ANC.. er.. what number is it.. 6? while G4 wants it to be AMERICAN Sasuke. So by that alone.. G4 wouldn't have a problem with foreign competitors (even bringing some from Japan (I might watch more if that happened.. LOL). Though the issue really becomes whether they were supposed to be fielding a group of American Athletes that are G4 viewers (which of course coincide with the M9 rule of "go to your local television station").
I didn't mind Rich at all since I do believe he's at least a resident if not full fledged citizen. It's not the same as someone from another country trying to get around the M9 rule (which I hate btw... but understand why they did it).
Will be interesting to see what's going to happen when the official wording comes out this weekend which they said they were going to announce/post it (during or after Ninja Warrior 23). I wonder if they are even going to put a provision there or just welcome everyone.

I didn't think it was weird that Richard King was the New Zealand representative. I didn't know he was originally from New Zealand period.
And as far as I can tell, other than Lee and the G4 trio, no one was brought in specifically for SASUKE. The Korean manga artist, the African baseball player, the French photographer and the Mongolian guy all happened to be kicking around in Japan at the time and were simply asked by M9/TBS. SASUKE is not broadcast in three of those countries (South Korea, Burkina Faso and Mongolia).

I must have missed that too and remember if it was said in ANW a) I didn't dissect that show.. and b) Ube's never seen it
