Okay, so I wasn't bored, this originally came from my initial indignation from Wipeout but more elaborated from these "what if" laments.
The plan would be for this to be a summer series, maybe 6 weeks, if not more. It could probably work on VS. even though no one watches it. If NBC is desperate enough, maybe they'll take it.
Anyway, like Sasuke, Viking, etc, this would be a multiple stage (4 or 5) obstacle course. The minor twist is that the 100 contestant slots would go to people throughout the world in Sasuke Maniac/Idol/Got Talent-style qualfying rounds. Obviously a disproportionate amount of slots would go to North America (at least 50), with the rest divvied up between Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania. This qualifying would make up approximately the first half of the series.
The rest of the series would be dedicated to the actual competition. As per usual, the only way to move on is to successfully complete all the obstacles within the time limit. No real twists in that department except for one thing: money.
Because this is an "unreachable star" and it's US television, whoever completes the final stage win US$1,000,000. However, all the stages before also have a dollar value for completion.
4-stage tree
5-stage tree
Only the contestant(s) furthest along will win money. For example, if 2 people attempt the Final Stage and fail, they will each receive $100,000. If 1 of the 2 succeeds, that 1 will get $1 Million and the other noting. If both succeed (a very unlikely event), they're both Millionaires. For sake of brevity, Makoto Nagano would have won $1.36 Million had Sasuke been run under these rules.
So yeah, that's my idea. It's a little more meat than what's been thrown around, but still not much. At least I was able to tap into my inner game show nerd on this.
