I thought it was due to the main amount that is the max to be given out?
Such as, 200 million yen total, but since there are 100 competitors... in theory... the max any one person can win is 2 million yen. Or something like that?
But who cares? The only prize I want is to press a red button that lets little yellow pillars rise and and throw smoke into the air. I know... simple pleasures.

heh, 100 total victories....well maybe if the new course is anything like the new kunochi!
They could set a max payout if they were worried about that, like if more than X amount of people win the prizes would be divided.

Oh god I hope the course is not Kunoichi.. I MUCH prefer the 1/100 set up and no gimmies.. I second that. Other than seeing Rie Komiya and some gals, the format for Kunoichi 8 was quite disappointing. Reminded me of the Viking celebrity challenge..

From wiki: "Quiz $ Millionaire (ƒNƒCƒY$ƒ~ƒŠƒIƒlƒA, Kuizu $ Mirionea?), also referred to as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in the show's logo, is a Japanese game show based on the original British format of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The show is hosted by television personality Monta Mino. The main goal of the game is to win 10 million yen by answering 15 multiple-choice questions correctly." "Super Millionaire Super Millionaire was a spinoff of Quiz $ Millionaire. There were 2 episodes. The grand prize was 20 million yen in episode 1 and 10 million in episode 2." So it's wiki so it's not always correct, but I'd find it hard to believe they got it that far off. So it appears there is no such law, and that TBS is just cheap! If I remember correctly, their Super Millionaire was the version with 10 questions where the last 5 questions each only had two answer choices and you couldn't walk away from the last two questions, but I don't really know enough about the show to talk about it further. Anyway, there's a little more to the story in the case of the regular Quiz $ Millionaire show. In this version of WWTBAM, the Phone-A-Friend lifeline is performed by making an in-house call to a sequestered room wherein four "friends" of the contestant wait during the contestant's game to help him simultaneously during the 30-second lifeline. As I understand it, any prize awarded past the 2 million yen cutoff is split amongst the 4 friends. This means that the top prize results in the player and his four friends each receiving the maximal 2 million yen. Another effect of this mechanic is that there is not a whole lot of money lost by the player when they "risk the money they've won" to answer another question, so many players that see the 15th (final) question will attempt to answer the question. This is in contrast to most countries where the last question is often walked away from due to the monetary risk. As a side note, what do you mean by "the 1/100 set up"?

I watched a JET airing of Banzuke last night and they offered 3 million yen for the completion of Struck Out.
Actually, the prize was 1.5 million but a special optional target raised that to 3 million. (If they tried and missed the prize was cut to 750,000 yen.)
The prize CAN go over 2 million. How much, I don't know.

Could they get around the money limit by giving winners a shopping spree at whatever sponsor's stores?
Like... the winner gets $20,000 and a $5,000 Shopping Spree at Lowe's or something? Or would that not work?

2 million yen? It should be 2 million dollars! The amount of training and work these guys do for sasuke, they damn well deserve that much if they win!
Most of them don't even compete for the money though, which is what makes them so admirable.

I think that's half the point of the (supposed) winnings cap. The other half involved this guy named Charles Van Doren (well, not just him) and long story short, they made a movie about it. I think that's also sort of built into Japanese culture, too, but I'm no expert.
