You need strength, not muscle, but more importantly, you need technique. It looked to me like he just had a slow, sloppy technique. I agree there, but it's not just their strength that makes them climb that fast. Their technique plays a huge role. Akiyama is hands down the fastest rope climber I've seen on Sasuke, but he's not THAT strong. It's not like he puts the others to shame, or anything. His technique is flawless, though. His technique was also pretty sloppy. Strength would help, though, yes. I can chin with 100 lbs around my waist. If I were to lose 20 lbs of fat, I could add 20 lbs of weight to my waist and there'd be no difference. Do you not comprehend that? The Salmon Ladder, Cliff Hanger and many other "fearsome" obstacles are a majority technique. (see above)

Since when did the G-rope require pure muscle? Not trying to be insulting or anything, but no matter how strong you are you'll need technique to climb fast. See Yamada Sasuke 3. Now See Akiyama, Sasuke 4. I'd say Yamada is easily stronger, but Akiyama's technique is far beyond Yamada's. There's a reason he won and Yamada didn't. It wasn't because of muscle.

I definitely agree with you on that one. As for Kanno or Urushihara, that's an extremely close competition. Both very strong new competitors, but I'm going to go with Kanno on this one. My gut instinct tells me he has more potential, but don't hold me to it.

i like kanno alot. he reminds me of shunsuke . but besides that i do feel that kanno has great potential to be in the final again Didn't they go to the same college? Kanno has alot of potential but I'm not sure if he will get Kanzenseiha, I mean look how fast he rope climbs with his arms in his profiles yet when he made the final he didn't climb that fast. I say he needs to work on using the technique for the final since he was fast with the other way yet slow how you should do it on the course. He also needs to work on the heavenly ladder speed and he has a chance. Yuuji it's hard to say how far he will go since he messed up jumping off the Unstable bridge. The navi showed he was working on the rope climbing so he has a shot, but it's hard to say since he jumped onto the end and they moved it back and he's only been to the Third Stage once so it's hard to say.

It really takes a lot of energy to know how well you perform and going all the way to the final stage will take out alot of energy, especially since the third stage takes up alot of your arm strength. thats the way i see it and why kanno didnt make it all the way to the top

I reckon Kanno's slightly poor technique on the Final Stage can be attributed to a lack of stamina. The first 3 stages take a lot out of you. That, I believe, is what stands between him and Kanzenseiha.

I agree, I think Kanno didn't acquit himself too well in the final stage from a mixture of fatigue and nerves. It seemed like he psyched himself out a bit. He got all caught up trying to transfer from the ladder to the rope and it took him ages, looked to me like he was panicking.

Well, he is a relative newcomer (3 SASUKEs is it?), so I imagine with time he'll get over that, and with time he'll build stamina. I guess that's maybe why I feel he has potential.

I also say too close to call...performance-wise, they're about the same, as Bada already said, and they both made (to me unexpected) mistakes in Stages 1&2 in their third time around, though only Kanno ultimately recovered from his. I think Yuuji started rushing a bit after he almost slipped off the first half of the Unstable Bridge, and that's what led to his (hilarious) backwards leap into the water.
