So apparently there's going to be another show for athletic competition show on NBC. It's the Titan's Games. It premieres Jan. 2nd. and appears to be hosted by Dwayne Johnson. It is being made by the producers of American Ninja Warrior. Also some of the ninjas have liked and commented on their Instagram page so maybe they will be involved? That's all I really know. No idea about the format.

Taken from official text:
"This new athletic competition offers everyday men and women the opportunity to step inside the Titan arena and compete against one of six reigning Titans in incredible head-to-head challenges designed to test their minds, bodies and hearts. If a contender defeats a Titan, the contender takes the Titan's place and joins the elite Titan group. But once they become a Titan, they must be victorious every week to keep their spot. In the end, the remaining Titans battle it out in hopes of becoming the last man and woman standing."
The format sounds a bit similar to Gladiators, but the events themselves seem most reminiscent of Sports Danshi Grand Prix. Gladiators was very much competitor vs hosts whereas this holds all players on a level field like Sportsman

The show premieres tonight with a double episode at 8/7c (the start of primetime). It will stay at this time slot with one hour episodes.
For the past few months, the network has been pushing this with countless commercials/promos throughout each day. I don't know how many different promo variations they have at this point. I'd be willing to bet they've shown more promos than even AGT: The Champions or any of their other shows in recent history. The promo during the end credits of a show seems to almost always be for Titan Games or AGT Champions.
Judging from the promos, and the fact that it's a network show, their personal stories are going to be featured heavily. That said, considering the format and the level of competition required, everyone cast should be a serious contender, so this should make their stories more meaningful and less Captain Tornado.
At a glance, it looks like a combination of American Gladiators, Broken Skull Challenge, and Ultimate Beastmaster, with some Pro Sportsman thrown in. The arena-like head-to-head matches should make it easier to follow along compared to something like Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge (which I liked anyway but was cancelled after Season 2).
The show should have decent ratings between the early time slot, regular promos, competition format, level of competition, and The Rock. But we'll see.

Heh, my wife wants to know when they're gonna have the Titan Games equivalents of the NNL/UNAA. I think she wants to smash concrete things...

I have to say, this quenched my thirst for an American Gladiators reboot...

The show certainly has potential. It's good enough to keep me watching.

I made a video discussing my thoughts on the show so far. I want to like it more than I do, but something isn't gelling with me. I'll continue to watch it but I hope the show gets better over time.

I agree that the show was a letdown. It was just not compelling.
I wasn't a big fan of either hour, but I agree that the beginning of the second hour was where it became unwatchable. Starting out with a double-bill seems to be a way to make some shows dull from the start - especially when each episode could be done in 30 minutes anyway.
I remember that line "Will it be him or the contestant we've never met before?" [Afterward] "Phew, I'm glad he made it, I was so much more invested in him!" And another issue is that all four of the hosts are on-set, so there can be no jokes like that. And I'm afraid that none of them would be compelled to make any jokes if they were able to :/.
I also agree that the hosts were hugely forgettable. It was a very Spartan setup - having four hosts (two in-booth, two on-set) that barely get seen. I'm glad I missed the DJ stuff, but then I don't remember anything they said!
The only really innovative idea I've seen so far is the punching a hole in the wall for Mount Olympus. Atlas Smash also sounds creative, but never watched that far.
I can't put my finger on it, but I just can't find any motivation to watch this show. It lacks entertaining obstacles or interesting commentary, so can't really keep attention.

The reason the show doesn't resonate with you two (or me) is quite simple - it's all fluff, and almost no competition. In an hour-long show, you've got just six short events to cut a pool of eight people down to two. It would be like if the ANW qualifiers showed a half-dozen runs and called it a day. Instead, in a single episode you've got something like 50 runners (more?) narrowed down to 30, and then 30 narrowed down to 15. Even with all the sob stories and fluff pieces, there's still a fair amount of content in ANW. Not so with Titan Games, which even with only six events still digests a couple of them each show.
Also, in ANW it's the runners against the course. The exciting part is watching people get farther and farther until someone actually does finish the course. In Titan Games, there's no such suspense. Someone is going to make it to the end, and we're just finding out who that is. And to be considered a "Titan" after winning a single challenge and then finishing a short course faster than someone else just seems undeserved. Because of the show format, it may even be someone whose "qualifier" was summarized, meaning the only time we see them is that final run. As cool as some of the challenges are, the show as a whole is somehow both sparse and repetitive, which just doesn't make for compelling TV.
EDIT: I'm now thinking of the comparison to American Gladiators. I don't remember that show particularly clearly, but I think two appealing aspects of American Gladiators, absent in the Titan Games, are the hand-to-hand, physical struggles and the presence of actual villains to root against. When a contender took on a gladiator, we had a reason to cheer for them, and a reason to want them to win instead of the other guy (similar in a way to ANW, where we can cheer for everyone because it's more often them against the course rather than them against each other). With Titan Games, the competition is indirect (often the challengers don't even see each other), and we have no reason to want one person over the other to succeed. It's not engaging, so it's not interesting.
EDIT 2: I just watched the latest episode of Titan Games and added up the total time in actual competition. The first four challenges together totaled 4 minutes, 10 seconds (one was only 45 seconds long and one was 25 seconds). The pair of finals together were 9 minutes, 5 seconds. That means, in a 43 minute show (that is, ignoring commercials), there were 13 minutes, 15 seconds of content, or less than one third of the show. The finals themselves didn't start until over 30 minutes (again, ignoring commercials) into the show. Think about that - you've watched a show for half an hour and have only seen less than 5 minutes of actual competition? Is it any wonder people aren't enthused?

The other thing about American Gladiators is that it had either 12 or 14 events (can't remember if it was 5 or 6 pre-Eliminator per gender) compared to the 6 here

The Official YouTube channel has highlight clips from each episode. Basically, clips from the show as it aired, but without the fluff, such as any intros or post-match celebrations or interviews. So far, it seems they have all the runs up on the channel, which is a plus. The Twitter account also has highlight clips from the show but with a bit more cut off versus the YouTube clips. They had the full first episode on YouTube for a while, but it seems to have disappeared. It's still available on Facebook on both the NBC Facebook Page and The Rock's Facebook Page. Nikki has been doing episode recaps that include short competitor bios and highlight clips from Twitter on ANWNation - www.americanninjawarriornation.com/the-titan-games

I just watched the Titan Games a while ago and I realized how empty the show was; it isn't like ANW where the fluffpiece-to-run ratio was about 1:1 (where the runs would be give or take 2 to 4 minutes long just like the backstories); it's more like watching touching stories for about 5 to 10 minutes and having a 20 second long challenge (right in the first episode the bulky dancer/soldier dude beat the one challenge in 22 or something seconds). The "obstacles" in that sense are way too short, not having any type of buildup.
Furthermore, there was only one heat out of the first four that was a comeback. Normally in challenges other than that first Hole-Punch resembling thingoe, once someone was ahead they would be almost guaranteed a win; and it's not like Ninja Warrior where size doesn't matter as much, or at least has tradeoffs, (a bigger height means more weight to carry, but also a longer reach for instance), but once you see a 250lbs guy vs a 180lbs guy you already would know who's gonna win. Hence it was boring.
And I really badly do want to like this show. In the trailers some of the later obstacles look super sick, but given how much of a turn off the first half was I'm not sure whether I want to watch any more.
TL,DR; Show boring because of too much fluff and too little meat; has potential bc of good looking obstacles; one-sidedness and lack of comebacks hurt it as well.

Agreed, there was a lot of potential for this show to succeed, thanks to the big celebrity pull of Johnson, and some of the interesting visual aesthetic, but they completely mismanaged their time, to the point where anything of actual substance was like a needle buried in a haystack. I'm not sure who looked at this premise and thought it was a halfway decent idea, but I guess that's just how things roll. Hopefully, this doesn't become a trend.

I loved Dwayne Johnson as the host; but like with Spartan, the other hosts were really forgettable, and the visuals were great like kunnai56 said. But not great content.

I don't know, but somehow it seems a bit lame that they've quite obviously planned this all around the brief announcement during the ANW finale.
I expect no better this year...
