I think that yes, if all the top athletes got together and stopped competing, NBC might be put in a tough spot. But they wouldn't pay, they'd just hype a bunch of rookies and take whatever hit comes to them.
However, it doesn't matter because the top athletes simply can't afford to do that. For a lot of them, ANW is what brings them their livelihood. They are dependent on the show's popularity to make a living. Any competitor whose job is "Ninja Coach" or "Gym Owner" is basically at the mercy of NBC.

TBH it is a rather naive look into reality television and the actual structure of ANW. They don't need stars and they have proven it year after year with the only people paid are their announcers. They camouflage the fact that many show up for free in the tens of thousands. The leaving in mass already happened when you had stars leaving when the NDA forbade them from doing other paid stuff around ANW4-5. Since then it's been tragedy porn and Lord knows they will find someone's backstory and make it into what they want. Even in an off year they are still 2nd in the ratings. NBC didn't have a hit in that timeslot for 10 years. ANW is not going anywhere anytime soon. And those who thought they could make a career either already left or are leaving now. The rest are still chasing the dream that somehow they will become stars by being on a reality show that's filled with 600+ hopefuls a season.

But seriously agree with this. It won't go anywhere anytime soon, however it's something to watch over the next couple of years.

Interesting guys The athletes have more power than they realise. If the top 20 athletes decided not to compete, it would be hard for NBC to explain on the air even though there would be many willing replacements For season 10, we are changing it all up! Welcome to the 1st allllllllll rookie season of ANW! anyone has a shot at being the top ninja this year! Apply now and secure your spot for this groundbreaking new season. ANW 10 - A fresh start.
