Just weighing in, the idea I got from talking to the producers is that since NW is an obstacle course, they want to tie into that theme by showing the competitors overcoming their own obstacles. This is where the background stories and "negative storylines" come in, although I would say they're not so much negative as they are motivational.
That said everyone's going to have different tastes as to how much of that they want to see on the show. It's definitely a stronger focus than the Japanese version so those that grew up with Sasuke (myself included) may prefer that format. ANW got pretty decent ratings so far so whatever they're doing seems to be working with the American audience.

Just saw an NBC commercial, was the usual japan recap footage (the same package anw4 (and part of 3) used every ep) and some ANW4 clips then just went to ANW5 Venice qualifying round
In the websites that usually handle a lot of the ratings information I usually get reliable television schedules. Here's what I found for ANW. It's a repeat of the set up from last year with a LOT of repeats (especially the G4 episodes)
I'll do what I can to update the discussion threads and create weekly. As a reminder. Keep ALL discussions of each of the televised episodes on said threads.
