I bring this up now since it is mentioned in the literature.
The TV magazines with the information for SASUKE 25 (there's not that much there so I haven't bothered writing about it) mentions the following: 元日の完全制覇した漆原に非難集中!!あの長靴はフェアじゃない (There is intense criticism of the New Year's victor Urushihara: Those boots are not fair)
There are a few blog posts in Japanese about this issue and it's mentioned in passing in the Japanese wikipedia entry for SASUKE . Basically some people don't think that it's fair that Yuuji wore rubber boots (that he brought himself). Some don't think it was a problem. Choose an answer and expound below.

The Boy Scout motto: Always Be Prepared. Yuuji was in this case.

The dude thought ahead. He was smart and prepared. And if its not in the rules (or an unwritten rule, like u cannot eat the obstacles) then you're fine.

I think that it's fair, I mean wearing boots to help on the ladder is good planning, I mean he brought them himself. I mean you don't see anyone complaining about those 1000 cans of Sasuke Spray everywhere and I would think that would be considered more unfair if you think about it (Not saying I have a problem with it, just saying the spray has to help more than boots). I mean he won because of skill anyways, would changing shoes really have made a difference?

Dear lord, people complain over everything now. He's a shoe salesman, why wouldn't he know what to wear at the right time? If he didn't, he wouldn't have a job there, be happy for the guy, everyone's so critical of this tournament, what's not fair is how you can't just be happy for the guy for dealing with that in who knows how cold it was being that early in the morning. I guess they ran out of gripes with the course itself and now have gone to desperate measures like shoes. He can wear Vibram on the course just fine, but boots is a BIG no-no? Recockulous.

I didn't notice the boots either, but hey, if he didn't get forced to change them before competing then its the other competitors faults for not wearing them as well. If they deem it unfair in the future and do not allow those boots in then fair enough, but up until this point anyone could have gotten away with it so too bad for anyone else who came fairly close because if they were smart enough maybe they would have been the next champion.

If he had broken any rules there is NO WAY M9 or the staff there that night would have let him win or keep his Kanzenseiha title.
He would have been disqualified on the spot or at the top lol!

I'm having a hard time seeing how rubber soles would even give an advantage on the final stage. Other than ensuring a sure grip on the ladder rungs, I think those shoes were just a light weight alternative to bare feet.

I agree 100% on this. Considering that he was a returning finalist and practiced like hell for it I don't see it as a "fluke" requiring special equipment for him to win it. Hell I think it's sour grapes considering that Nagano and company have made a ritual of changing shoes depending on which stage they were in. Geez.. of all the things to complain about.. you'd think they'd be happy someone won.. I voted the last one (though I also think it's fair) since he came prepared to not repeat his Sasuke 23 performance and do better than Sasuke 22. Which he did ultimately.

Jealous people are jealous.
Unless your wearing a jet pack in the final stage, you should be able to wear whatever the hell you want.

IMO, it didn't matter. With all of his rope climbing practice beforehand, he probably would've won either way. Besides, I don't think that your footwear is going to be more of a factor in beating the Final Stage than months of practicing for it.

Doesn't Kenji Takahashi wear boots? Tabi or barefootin' for Kongu. As for Yuuji, I was just happy he won...and didn't wear the lavender little girl shoes. I know, I know...but they still look like little girl shoes. Yuuji obviously puts a lot of thought into his approach to the different stages without seeming obsessive or obnoxious. Good for him. Remember when Yamada was carrying on about shoes and the bungee bridge in Sasuke 18? I think somebody ought to give split-sole dance/twirling shoes a try. I bet they'd do great on the jumping spider and any of the climbing obstacles.

Doesn't Kenji Takahashi wear boots? Tabi or barefootin' for Kongu. Yup. Tabi in stage 1, 2 and eventually 4, barefooted in stage 3. IIRC. Back on topic, I think it doesn't matter. Mostly because he WON, that is all, and complaining about fair/not fair is useless. Second, if it really mattered that much what shoes do you wear, M9 wouldn't have let him win. If they're fine with it, we can't do anything but accept their decisions.

As long as he won it doesn't matter if he wore them or not. =P
